“The space in between will never go away. The gaps in a city, the unoccupied, leftover zones, change and transform, but can never go away, because they are an inherent by-product of a city itself. No matter the level of planning or density of a city, areas can be found that aren’t intended for human occupation: the trash filled ravine between an apartment complex and a freeway, the overgrown space around a rainwater run off, the space beneath a bridge or beside a train track, an empty lot, in the industrial part of town. These types of spaces are profound as they don’t tell our bodies what to do. Most of our lives are spent in spaces and around objects that tell us how to act. The stairs tell us how to walk, the chair how to sit, the sidewalk where to go, but what about that indiscriminate space that exists at the partitions of determined spaces? What happens when we are alleviated of this subliminal guidance? Maybe we become more free, not just physically but mentally, maybe we become more aware, and more susceptible to our surroundings, in effect, opening ourselves to new states of consciousness."
